Which cognac to give? A guide by occasion and budget

Giving cognac almost always pleases, as long as you pick the right bottle. Between a VS at about €30 and a Hors d’Âge at nearly €180, the difference is not only price: it is the age of the eaux-de-vie, their finesse, and above all how the recipient will enjoy them. Three questions will help you choose.

1. Who will receive the bottle?

If the person is new to cognac or drinks it mostly in cocktails or cooking, a VS or a VSOP is plenty: livelier, fruitier, and suited to every use. For an enthusiast who sips slowly, aim older: a cognac aged longer in oak develops more complex notes of dried fruit, vanilla and soft spices.

When in doubt, the VSOP is the safest choice: mature enough to sip neat, approachable enough not to intimidate.

2. What is your budget?

3. Which occasion?

Christmas and holidays. A VSOP or the Folle Blanche 5 years: safe choices that shine after dinner.

Milestone birthday or birth. The 1989 and 1984 Barriques, Grande Champagne cask cognacs, let you give the year of birth or marriage: a rare, personal gift.

Business gift or thank-you. The Hors d’Âge in its classic box, for a polished presentation.

Retirement, wedding. An exceptional bottle to share on the day or keep for later.

VS, VSOP, XO: what the labels mean

Age statements are regulated: a VS (Very Special) has aged at least 2 years, a VSOP at least 4 years, and an XO (like the Hors d’Âge) at least 10 years. The longer the eau-de-vie rests in oak, the rounder and more complex it becomes. Our page on the ageing of cognac explains what happens in the cask.

Presenting your gift

A gift box is available for all our references. We do not offer gift wrapping: the box already looks the part, and you can add a note. For delivery before Christmas, order at least one week ahead. Feel free to tell the story of the bottle: that of a family estate in Grande Champagne.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best cognac for a beginner? A VS or a VSOP, served neat or long.

Should I give a more expensive cognac to make an impression? Not necessarily: a well-chosen VSOP beats an XO that never gets opened.

How should the gift be stored? Upright, away from light and heat; once opened, it keeps for a long time.
